Community Outreach & Education
Education Programs:
We host a variety of groups at the Islamic Resource Center for educational presentations, art and cultural exhibitions, films, panel discussions and much more. Guests range from university classes, community groups, faith groups, social justice organizations, school groups and many others.
Networking Brunch
The Networking Brunch monthly program is a hospitality event at the Islamic Resource Center that provides opportunities for people of all socio/cultural/faith backgrounds to connect, network and make new friends. Our ever-popular brunches include a delicious buffet and an interesting topic or activity, covering a myriad of interests from cooking, art, politics, environment, health, career and technology.
The brunches are designed to enhance cultural awareness by inviting the public to participate in programs that are of interest to both Muslim and the broader community. Both men and women are welcome. An openness for listening and sharing opinions in the Q & A discussions is encouraged.
Sharing a meal with others taps our elemental need for sustenance and the joy of celebration. We do this with friends and family. With people we have never met, it decreases barriers within a friendly, cheerful, relaxed setting. This is often how lasting memories and friendships are forged.
International Visitors
The Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition is frequently called upon to host visitors from around the world. The visitors are chosen by embassies overseas and are part of the U.S. State Department’s National Council for International Visitors (NCIV) which is based in Washington D.C.
Regional Flagship Language Initiatives
The special initiative of the Boren Awards for International Study is an intensive language study program offered at
UW-Madison. Through South Asia Flagship Language Initiative (SAFLI), students participate in a full-time domestic summer program for cultural immersion in Hindi and Urdu.
Students visit the Islamic Resource Center to engage with local Turkish and Indonesian speaking people to build conversational confidence in their languages. They also learn about Islamic culture and traditions to prepare for their immersion in predominantly Muslim countries.
