Muslim and New to Milwaukee

Milwaukee’s thriving Muslim community is the pulse of the city’s south side. Countless restaurants, bakeries and markets line major city streets offering an array of choices.

Milwaukee is home to nine mosques, two full-time schools and one of the largest Rohingya Muslim populations in the country.

The highest concentration of Muslim Milwaukeeans live in the 53221 area code. That encompasses parts of the city’s south side and the villages of Greenfield and Franklin.

The Islamic Society of Milwaukee (ISM) is Wisconsin’s largest Muslim institution, operating three mosques

in the Greater Milwaukee Area. The K-12 Salam School is one of the largest Islamic schools in the country.

Other mosques include the Islamic Dawah Center (IDC) on the north side and Masjid Sultan Muhammad in the Harambee neighborhood.

Clara Muhammad School on MLK Drive was the first Islamic school in Milwaukee, established by Black Muslims in 1972.

There are over a dozen halal Muslim-owned grocery stores including Oak Creek’s Al-Youssef Supermarket & Restaurant, Jerusalem Market in Franklin and Sasta Bazaar on Historic Mitchell Street. Rayan Supermarket, Al Asalah and Amanah Food Market are located near General Mitchell International Airport.

Muslim-owned food trucks in Milwaukee include The Fatty Patty with two locations downtown and in Wauwatosa, Noosy’s gourmet American fare downtown, and Taste Amir’s Roti offering delicious Rohingya fare on the south side.

Wonderful eateries like the two-story Casablanca on Brady Street, Shawarma House’s two locations on the east side and in Brookfield, Anmol South Asian Kitchen on Historic Mitchell Street and Burger Hub at the corner of 27th Street and College Avenue keep the list going on and on. For delicious Yemeni cuisine, MANDI Restaurant in Oak Creek is not to be missed.
