Our Peaceful Home Advocate
Our Peaceful Home (OPH) is a family-strengthening and domestic abuse project of the Muslim Women’s Coalition (MWC). Our mission is to strengthen Muslim families by preventing all types of abuse.
Who and What OPH Represents
OPH provides confidential services with trained advocates who speak a multitude of languages. We also provide survivors with culturally appropriate safety plans, emergency transportation, emergency daycare services, short-term and transitional housing, counseling, and advocacy services.
Job Description
This position will be under the direct supervision of the OPH Manager. The Our Peaceful Home Advocate will provide direct and remote advocacy services to immigrants, children of immigrants, refugees, and any domestic violence victims and survivors who seek culturally relevant and sensitive services in the Greater Milwaukee area.
The Advocate will support in providing and/or facilitating education/training to schools, Mosques, community organizations, law enforcement, and human services, as well as continue to build positive working partnerships with community agencies. The Advocate will assist in developing and implementing family-strengthening workshops either in person or online.
- Support education and/or training on the dynamics of domestic violence in the Muslim community for human services, law enforcement, schools, referral sources, etc.
- Network with community resources on an ongoing basis to establish cross-training opportunities for professionals working with Muslim abuse victims.
- Promote Our Peaceful Home services to ensure community members are aware of resources for abuse victims and survivors, as well as Family Strengthening workshops.
- Provide direct services to help line callers, walk-ins, and ongoing clients in accordance with Our Peaceful Home’s mission and philosophy.
- Share backup responsibilities on evenings and weekends.
- Attend staff meetings, in-services, retreats, etc., as scheduled.
- Attend at least one professional job training related to your job description per year.
- Other duties as assigned by the OPH Manager.
- The candidate will have a college degree, course work in Social Work, Health and Human Services, or a related field, and a minimum of one year of experience working with victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and/or child abuse.
- Knowledge of and experience working with domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse.
- Knowledge of the immigrant and refugee communities and their challenges, as well as knowledge of Muslim cultural practices and the differentiation in how cultural vs. religious practices manifest in these situations.
- Must be able to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds, i.e., race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, and disability.
- Must have the ability to set clear, professional boundaries and maintain confidentiality.
- Must have the ability to handle crisis situations in a calm, effective manner.
- Must be able to speak to the public and one-on-one regarding abuse issues in a knowledgeable, skillful manner.
- Must have knowledge of area resources available to assist the clients we serve.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, provide transportation, and proof of auto insurance.
- Must be willing to have a background check.
